Text: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgement; of sin because they believed not on me… (John 16:7-10)

The Gospel appointed for this service draws our attention to the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead. In his last moment with his disciples, Jesus informed them that he had to go away from them so that they could have the Holy Spirit, as the Holy Spirit would be with them and within them. This would compensate for the physical absence of Jesus Christ that they would miss. At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon all those who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ. The work of the Holy Spirit consists of the following:

  1. Convincing the world of its sins and calling for repentance
  2. Showing the standard of God’s righteousness to anyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ
  3. Demonstrating Christ’s judgement on Satan

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the life of the individual is highly important in that:

(1)    It marks the beginning of the Christian life as one cannot be a Christian without the Holy Spirit (Roman 8:9)

(2)       We cannot be united with Christ and his spirit without the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthian 6:17)

(3)       We cannot become adopted children of God without the Holy Spirit (Roman 8:14-17, Galatia 4:6-7)

(4)       We cannot be in the body of Christ without the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthian 12:13)

(5)       The Spirit is the power in our new life.

(6)       The spirit unites the Christian community to Christ (Ephesians 2:19-22)

The Holy Spirit can be experienced by all and can work through all, individually and corporately (Eph. 4:4; 1Cor. 12:1-11).  Let us therefore open our lives to the Holy Spirit to fill us with His power.

Come down, O love divine

Seek thou this soul of mine

And visit it with thine own ardour glowing

O Comforter, draw near

Within my heart appear

And kindle it thy holy flame bestowing
