Theme:   God’s Provisions for Believers

Text:  I Sam 17: 37 –  50  & Eph. 6: 10  20.

As believers, unless we come to understand the fact that most of the battle we engage in or issues we face have spiritual undertone and correlations. It is very natural to think that Herod antagonism and persecution of the Church was ordinary. If we look at it with spiritual eyes, we will see that it was the Devil that fought against the Church with Herod as his agent.  The Scripture in Ephesians 6:12 says thus: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

In our Old Testament Reading, I Samuel 17: 37 – 50, it was only David who understood that the battle was beyond physical.  Every other person in Saul’s army saw it as a physical battle and went to the battle with human provisions for war.  They got to the battle and discovered they were not a match for the Philistines who were led by a giant, called Goliath, a man who had been a warrior since his youth and who was good in the usage of man’s provisions for battles. The bible described him as a champion.  The Israelites army forgot they were believers, forgot the word of God, relied on human provisions and saw themselves as Servant of Saul and not as servants of Yahweh.  They relied on Saul and not God. Goliath also knew this that he described the Israelites as “Servants of Saul” (I Sam. 17:8). When David heard Goliath speaking, he became annoyed, he saw Goliath defying not Saul nor Israelites army but God of Israel. He knew the battle was not ordinary but Spiritual.  He decided to face Goliath, not relying on human provisions but God’s, when human provisions was forced on him, he could not move and requested it be taken off. He went to face Goliath with his sling and five smooth stones.

Goliath was 9 feet and 9 inches with bronze helmet on his head, wore a coat of scale, armour of bronze on him, a bronze javelin slung on his back and a spear in his hand, protected by a shield bearer. With God’s provisions David killed him and won victory for Israel. Ephesians chapter 6 in a metaphorical sense presents God’s provisions to the believers for Spiritual battle. They are:

Belt of Truth — The armour begins with Truth, when we put this on other materials in the armour become secured, it shows we are ready for battle.  The antidote against Satan lies is the truth. We need to know the truth and stand firm on it.

Breastplate of righteousness–: To be righteous is to first repent, be forgiven of our sins; if we are not righteous we are simply opening ourselves to Devils attack.

Gospel of Peace –: This is engaging in gospel business.

Shield of faith –: When our faith in God is strong, it is difficult for Satan to penetrate us.

Helmet of Salvation–: this is focusing on the salvation Christ got for us and also depending on his strength.

Sword of the Spirit –: This is the word of God, we need to know it and apply it to all our situations

Prayer and supplication in the Spirit— We are to be watchful.

Beloved, it is only through God’s provisions that we can have victory in spiritual battles.
