“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the word. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life is not of the Father, but of the world.

And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” – 1John 2:15-17.

The theme for this week is aimed at addressing the following:

(1)  The need for Christians to trace their journey back to God wherever we have missed it and put the love of God above everything else.

(2)   The need for Christians to be conscious of every form of worldliness and their peculiarities.

(3)   The need for spiritual assessment as regards the level we are, in terms of our Love for God and humanity.

Our theme is relevant and appropriate at this time when many of us Christians are competing with the world in the pursuit of things of the world.

In 1 John 2:15-17, Apostle John was writing to believers of all ages and various experiences in the faith. The three categories of people involved are: Children, Fathers, and Young men.  These categories of people made up our society today.

Every believer is warned against the cravings and desires prevalent in the world, which are seen inform of

(i)       Lust of the flesh

(ii)       Lust of the eyes

(iii)      The pride of life

As Christians, we must not allow ourselves to become affected by the evil attitudes and behavior of unbelievers among who we live. We are also not to love nor follow their patterns of life. We should realize that whatever we are or have here are temporary, they are for a short while. The word of God says, we brought nothing to the world and we are taking nothing out at our exit. St. James in James 4:4 said ….”Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?” Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God”.

(I)     Lukewarm attitude to reading of the word of God (Bible).  This happens when we prefer to read other secular books, journals and other printed materials than the Bible

(ii)  Lack of interest in evangelism, when evangelism which is the heartbeat of God becomes uninteresting.   (Matt. 28:18  20)

(iii)   Spiritual insensitivity: This occurs when we develop negative attitude to spiritual matters: eg. Bible study class, prayer meetings, Christian                      programmes which are to help us develop our spiritual lives (Heb. 10:25).

(i)            This world is temporal while heaven is eternal.

(ii)           Anyone who loves the world is an enemy of God and the love of the Father is not in Him.

(iii)          Jesus’ second coming is imminent.

Dear people of God, henceforth, let us make Paul’s admonition in 2 Corinthians 4:18 our life style;  “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal”.
