Christ Our Healer

Text:  “I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house. And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went fort before them all. Insomuch that they were all amazed and glorify God, saying we never saw it on this fashion” Mark 2:11-12

Most often many of us are concerned with our physical state of health to the neglect the spiritual. We fail to realise that at times there are corresponding relationship between our spiritual condition and our state of health. It is true that there are some illnesses which are not out of poor or sinful spiritual state of the health but simply genetic or abuse of one’s body (poor diet, stress and not getting adequate rest). When a man is sick, it is important for him to know the root cause of the illness, whether, spiritual, psychological or physical. Whatever illness we have Jesus has the power to heal us of them when we go to Him in faith. Isaiah 53:5 says; “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the Chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed”.

Jesus after performing some healing miracles in Capernaum left the city to minister for a while at a desolate place (Mark 1 21-45). It was when he returned, and was in a house, probably, the house of Peter where he healed Peter’s Mother in-law that a paralytic man carried by four men was brought to him for healing. These four men had constraint in getting their sick friend to the presence of Jesus because the crowd listening to Jesus teachings did not give them way through the door. Due to their determination and faith they climbed the roof of the house, opened it and dropped the man in front of Jesus. Those four did not let the situation that was before them and the obstacles deter them from getting to Jesus. We are to learn from their actions by making sure we get to Jesus and as well bring others to him for the healing of our heart’s spiritual condition. We get to him by attending services, Bible study programmes, praying and by making personal Bible study part of our daily routine. We bring others to him by not minding what it costs us to preach to them. We encourage them to come to church, give them tracts and pray to Jesus to touch their lives and heal their unhealthy spiritual conditions (by forgiving their sins).

Jesus gave the paralytic man the only healing that matters. He gave him internal healing by forgiving him of his sins. Jesus did not treat the surface but the root. The root of the man’s illness was sin, the forgiveness he received brought him physical healing. We are looking forward to lent, it is an opportunity for us to go to our healer to get healing from our sinful and bad spiritual state. Jesus is ready to heal us. 1 John 1:9 says: if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. According to Acts 3:19, if we repent and turn to God, we will receive forgiveness and time of refreshing will come to us from Him.

Beloved, Christ is our healer, let us do all we could to get to Him for healing, He will surely heal us. Whatever illness we may have, be it Spiritual, Psychological or Physical; none is above His power.
